TLDR EP 04
5 practical tips for using cannabis to relieve stress and anxiety
We join together for a low-dose plant ritual
I guide us through some easy box breath techniques to help ground and further ignite the endocannabinoid system
Hi plant fam. I write this week with devastation in my heart.
There was no episode of Higher Spirits last week because my city and neighborhood were ablaze in the worst wildfire in US history. Thankfully I am safe and the heroic firefighters saved my home but it has been a traumatic week. I am still processing the phases of grief. Releasing the episode I had planned was not in resonance and I didn’t feel it was supporting the collective.
It’s during trying times like this that I am so grateful for the wellness tools I have learned and practiced that allow me to regulate my nervous system. One of these tools is our dear friend mamma ganja. When I sat down and asked how I could be of support during this time with my knowledge of cannabis, I tuned into the collective anxiety and worry of the moment. Instead of releasing the awesomely nerdy conversation on cannabis science and research I had planned, I decided sharing how I use this plant to help manage stress felt more true and more supportive for community.
Using cannabis to manage stress and anxiety requires mindful practice that can often tread a fine line because the very same plant can also induce anxiety and acute paranoia. So, how can you use cannabis to reduce anxiety rather than increase it?
Tips to Use Cannabis to Reduce Anxiety
Here is an overview of my 5 tips for using cannabis to reduce anxiety. Listen to the episode to dive into these deeper.
Go low and slow with low-dose products
Choose a product with calming terpenes linalool, myrcene, and beta-caryophyllene
Choose your set + setting
Be mindful of over-use
Pair cannabis with relaxation techniques
My Digital Debue
In the second half of the episode, I guide us through a brief ritual and breathing technique. I have guided hundreds of people through cannabis rituals during my yoga classes around Los Angeles over the years but this is the first time sharing any of my practice online. It feels vulnerable but I want to share these techniques with anyone who needs a calming quiet moment. They have been so supportive in managing my anxiety and I hope they can support you too.
I love pairing cannabis with breathwork because research is finding that breathwork also stimulates the endocannabinoid system, meaning that you can use breathing to get you higher instead of consuming more weed.
Let me know what you think! Seriously, feedback is so appreciated during this time of exploration.
We’ll be back to regular programming with more regular programming and an awesome conversation with Riley Kirk, PhD on the magic of the endocannabinoid system and the state of research in cannabis soon.
